Papaya

Papaya is a rich fruit with a sweet flavor when ripe.  You’ll know it’s ready when the skin is yellow and the fruit is soft to the touch.   The flesh has a smooth texture, lots of health benefits, and is low in calories.  It’s filled with fiber, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. 

How to cut it

Papaya is a big fruit that should be cut in half to get to the flesh.

  1. The skin and seeds are not recommended to eat.
  2. When cut in half, scoop out the seeds, leaving  the bright orange flesh.

How to eat it?

Papaya is commonly eaten raw.  It can also be cooked for a rich flavor.

papaya smoothie

This is a simple, delicious and nutritious drink.  Enjoy anytime!

Instructions:

  • 1/2 medium papaya
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 tbsp condensed milk (optional)
  • 1/2 cup of water
 

Instructions: 

  • Cut the papaya into small pieces.
  • Blend with rest of the ingredients.
  • Served in a chilled glass over ice.
  • Enjoy with ice cream or alone as a delicious dessert.

Roasted Papaya with Brown Sugar

This very simple and sweet dish can be a yummy exotic addition to your BBQ!

Ingredients: 

  • 2 medium papayas, halved and deseeded
  • 2 tbsp light-brown sugar
  • 1¼tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 lime in 4 wedges
  

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 450F.
  • Stir sugar and ginger in a small bowl.
  • Arrange the papaya halves, and put the cut sides up in a baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the halves. 
  • Bake the papaya, brushing the edges with melted sugar 2 or 3 times, until the mixture is bubbling, around 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Take out of the oven and finish on the grill if you’d like.
  • Sprinkle each serving with a pinch of cayenne and serve with lime wedges.
